Graaf van de Elzas en Bouzonville, voogd van Remiremont, hertog van Opper-Lotharingen (1070-1115). Diederik is de oudste zoon maar zijn broer Gerhard maakt ook aanspraken op de titel, in 1073 komt het tot een schikking.

1075 vecht met koning Hendrik IV in de slag bij Homburg aan de Unstruth, tegen de opstandige Saksen. De echtgenoot van (de zwangere) Hedwig vecht mee aan de kant van de Saksen en wordt bij deze slag gedood. Diederik en Hedwig trouwen korte tijd later.

1078 verovert de stad Metz voor de partij van de koning

1079 wordt wegens zijn vijandschap tegen de aartsbisschop van Metz in de ban gedaan. 1082 krijgt de aartsbisschop de stad weer in handen.
